Stretch assignments are one of the best methods to accelerate the development of talent, as the learning that occurs on the job provides a meaningful approach. The question is, however, what defines a stretched assignment and whether an assignment can be too stretched.

 

For someone who's never worked abroad in a different culture, it's a significant development opportunity to work abroad. For someone who has never worked outside the operating function it will be a stretch to move to a completely different function like sales. For someone with solid experience at assistant general manager level it will likely be a stretch to move directly to senior general manager level.
